Where is Balhaddah?

Balhaddah is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hazipur community development block and is served by the Balhaddah190 gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031050, and it covers 109 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 527 people in Balhaddah: 271 men and 256 women, living in 109 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 109 hectares, the population density works out to about 483 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 945 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 58, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 53 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.86 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.18 per cent and women at 78.35 per cent. The census recorded 155 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 135 main workers, the largest group, 95, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 37 other workers in trade, transport and services and 3 agricultural labourers. A further 20 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (87 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 95 cultivators and 10 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
