Barian Kalan is a village of Garhshankar tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mahilpur, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mahilpur community development block and is served by the Barian--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031881, and it covers 320 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,462 people in Barian Kalan: 1,262 men and 1,200 women, living in 524 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 320 hectares, the population density works out to about 769 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 951 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 285, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,275 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.68 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.19 per cent and women at 70.86 per cent. The census recorded 850 workers, about 35 per cent of the village.
