Where is Bhol Kalota?

Bhol Kalota is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and is served by the Bhol--Kalota gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031327, and it covers 204 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 794 people in Bhol Kalota: 384 men and 410 women, living in 172 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 204 hectares, the population density works out to about 389 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1068 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 87, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 52 people, about 7 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.4 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.28 per cent and women at 84.86 per cent. The census recorded 147 workers, about 19 per cent of the village. Of the 45 main workers, the largest group, 27, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 13 cultivators on their own land and 5 household industry workers. A further 102 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhol Kalota's land. Of the village's 204 hectares, 89 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 16 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (16 hectares). About 59 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 21 cultivators and 26 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

Mukerian, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bringli, Palahar, Dholal and Basantpur.
