Where is Chingar Wan?

Chingar Wan is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and is served by the Chingar-Wan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031284, and it covers 496 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,967 people in Chingar Wan: 987 men and 980 women, living in 396 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 496 hectares, the population density works out to about 397 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 993 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 235, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 69 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.5 per cent and women at 79.75 per cent. The census recorded 591 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 418 main workers, the largest group, 321, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 45 cultivators on their own land and 26 agricultural labourers. A further 173 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chingar Wan's land. Of the village's 496 hectares, 216 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 187 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (136 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (51 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 110 cultivators and 72 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
