Depur is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and is served by the Depur,Dalwali Kalan,Dalwali Khurd, Damowal, Goewal gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031268, and it covers 566 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 5,189 people in Depur: 2,641 men and 2,548 women, living in 1,081 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 566 hectares, the population density works out to about 917 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 965 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 544, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 466 people, about 9 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.65 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.52 per cent and women at 87.78 per cent. The census recorded 1,283 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 1,163 main workers, the largest group, 887, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 139 cultivators on their own land and 112 agricultural labourers. A further 120 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Depur's land. Of the village's 566 hectares, 357 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 162 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (21 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (141 hectares). About 151 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 146 cultivators and 170 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
