Where is Ghalian?

Ghalian is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mukerian community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031140, and it covers 52 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 292 people in Ghalian: 138 men and 154 women, living in 59 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 52 hectares, the population density works out to about 562 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1116 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 33, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 40 people, about 14 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.43 per cent and women at 83.21 per cent. Irrigation came mainly from canals (6 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (28 hectares). About 8 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
