Where is Jalota?

Jalota is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030977, and it covers 186 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,479 people in Jalota: 724 men and 755 women, living in 326 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 186 hectares, the population density works out to about 795 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1043 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 148, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 664 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.73 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.96 per cent and women at 85.67 per cent. The census recorded 426 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 338 main workers, the largest group, 226, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 108 cultivators on their own land and 2 agricultural labourers. A further 88 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jalota's land. Of the village's 186 hectares, 158 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 157 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (157 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 112 cultivators and 3 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
