Where is Jaura?

Jaura is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tanda community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030686, and it covers 242 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,848 people in Jaura: 945 men and 903 women, living in 411 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 242 hectares, the population density works out to about 764 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 956 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 177, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,089 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.84 per cent and women at 81.15 per cent. The census recorded 494 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 331 main workers, the largest group, 214, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 100 cultivators on their own land and 14 agricultural labourers. A further 163 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (212 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day.
