Where is Nikoo Chak?

Nikoo Chak is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hazipur community development block and is served by the Nikoo-Chak gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031263, and it covers 143 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,481 people in Nikoo Chak: 737 men and 744 women, living in 304 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 143 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,036 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1009 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 151, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 713 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.02 per cent and women at 82.34 per cent. The census recorded 364 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 290 main workers, the largest group, 134, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 100 cultivators on their own land and 32 agricultural labourers. A further 74 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
