Where is Pandori?

Pandori is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mukerian community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031053, and it covers 448 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,108 people in Pandori: 1,058 men and 1,050 women, living in 432 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 448 hectares, the population density works out to about 471 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 992 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 209, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 471 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.91 per cent and women at 81.77 per cent. The census recorded 533 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 419 main workers, the largest group, 269, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 125 cultivators on their own land and 15 household industry workers. A further 114 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Pandori's land. Of the village's 448 hectares, 351 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 262 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (86 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (176 hectares). About 92 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 129 cultivators and 28 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Jamalpur Kalan, Bhagran, Jhigla Pind and Barota Urf Puro Nangal.
