Where is Shahpur?

Shahpur is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030792, and it covers 220 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 658 people in Shahpur: 332 men and 326 women, living in 132 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 220 hectares, the population density works out to about 299 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 982 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 63, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 324 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.69 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.67 per cent and women at 77.89 per cent. The census recorded 220 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 191 main workers, the largest group, 92, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 65 cultivators on their own land and 34 agricultural labourers. A further 29 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Shahpur's land. Of the village's 220 hectares, 204 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 194 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (194 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
