Where is Thana?

Thana is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030905, and it covers 1,082 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 461 people in Thana: 233 men and 228 women, living in 99 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 1,082 hectares, the population density works out to about 43 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 979 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 49, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 266 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.17 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.67 per cent and women at 83.73 per cent. The census recorded 315 workers, about 68 per cent of the village. Of the 217 main workers, the largest group, 117, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 87 agricultural labourers and 12 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 98 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Thana's land. Of the village's 1,082 hectares, 987 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 546 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (546 hectares). About 95 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 136 cultivators and 116 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
