Where is Chakrala?

Chakrala is a village in Jalandhar West tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kartarpur, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalandhar (West) community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030498, and it covers 249 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 654 people in Chakrala: 330 men and 324 women, living in 134 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 249 hectares, the population density works out to about 263 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 982 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 75, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 182 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.55 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.55 per cent and women at 74.48 per cent. The census recorded 198 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 194 main workers, the largest group, 86, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 61 agricultural labourers and 44 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 4 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chakrala's land. Of the village's 249 hectares, 224 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (224 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 87 cultivators and 62 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Kartarpur, about 9 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Jalandhar West, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mustfapur, Aima, Musapur and Talwandi Bhilan.
