Where is Garhi Mahansingh?

Garhi Mahansingh is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Goraya, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Phillaur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030168, and it covers 238 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,231 people in Garhi Mahansingh: 596 men and 635 women, living in 256 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 238 hectares, the population density works out to about 517 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1065 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 97, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 542 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.69 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.29 per cent and women at 73.48 per cent. The census recorded 564 workers, about 46 per cent of the village. A further 400 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Phillaur, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Katana, Aujla (191), Masani and Ladhar Khurd.
