Where is Karari?

Karari is a village of Jalandhar East tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Alawalpur, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalandhar (West) community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030324, and it covers 203 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,670 people in Karari: 840 men and 830 women, living in 349 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 203 hectares, the population density works out to about 822 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 988 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 176, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,038 people, about 62 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.51 per cent and women at 81.96 per cent. The census recorded 485 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 468 main workers, the largest group, 375, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 52 cultivators on their own land and 35 agricultural labourers. A further 17 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
