The village falls in the Rurka Kalan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030222, and it covers 1,240 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 7,467 people in Rurka Kalan: 3,835 men and 3,632 women, living in 1,640 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 1,240 hectares, the population density works out to about 602 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 700, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,423 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.14 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.59 per cent and women at 77.52 per cent. The census recorded 2,470 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 2,226 main workers, the largest group, 1,476, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 649 cultivators on their own land and 59 household industry workers. A further 244 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
