Where is Talwan?

Talwan is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nurmahal, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurmahal community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030016, and it covers 2,390 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,262 people in Talwan: 3,244 men and 3,018 women, living in 1,315 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 2,390 hectares, the population density works out to about 262 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 930 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 558, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,133 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.46 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.25 per cent and women at 71.31 per cent. The census recorded 2,639 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 1,928 main workers, the largest group, 986, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 576 cultivators on their own land and 277 agricultural labourers. A further 711 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 601 cultivators and 384 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Buraj Hassan, Bhundri, Gag Alias Dhagara and Sadhara.
