Where is Amritpur?

Amritpur is a village in Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil of Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kapurthala, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029377, and it covers 457 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,587 people in Amritpur: 815 men and 772 women, living in 268 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 457 hectares, the population density works out to about 347 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 259, about 16 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,475 people, about 93 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 59.34 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68 per cent and women at 50.38 per cent. The census recorded 641 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 267 main workers, the largest group, 168, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 67 agricultural labourers and 25 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 374 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (396 hectares). About 61 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. The directory recorded Kapurthala, about 16 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Sultanpur Lodhi, the tehsil headquarters, and Kapurthala town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Baja, Mand Goindwal, Safdarpur and Jhugian Araian.
