Where is Baja?

Baja is a village of Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kapurthala, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029376, and it covers 135 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,210 people in Baja: 604 men and 606 women, living in 237 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 135 hectares, the population density works out to about 898 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1003 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 188, about 16 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,180 people, about 98 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 53.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 62.16 per cent and women at 43.65 per cent. The census recorded 368 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (117 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 73 cultivators and 291 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
