Bhooi is a village of Kapurthala tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kapurthala, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kapurthala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029273, and it covers 230 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,178 people in Bhooi: 613 men and 565 women, living in 242 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 230 hectares, the population density works out to about 512 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 922 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 138, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 641 people, about 54 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.91 per cent and women at 70.2 per cent. The census recorded 466 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 297 main workers, the largest group, 236, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 40 cultivators on their own land and 20 agricultural labourers. A further 169 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhooi's land. Of the village's 230 hectares, 195 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (195 hectares). About 35 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 42 cultivators and 156 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
