Where is Chakkotla?

Chakkotla is a village in Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil of Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sultanpur Lodhi, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029487, and it covers 117 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 302 people in Chakkotla: 159 men and 143 women, living in 58 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 117 hectares, the population density works out to about 258 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 899 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 26, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 53 people, about 18 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.17 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.31 per cent and women at 71.32 per cent. The census recorded 116 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 108 main workers, the largest group, 60, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 41 other workers in trade, transport and services and 7 agricultural labourers. A further 8 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (102 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
