Where is Maniala?

Maniala is a village in Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil of Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sultanpur Lodhi, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029500, and it covers 219 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 421 people in Maniala: 210 men and 211 women, living in 74 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 219 hectares, the population density works out to about 192 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1005 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 42, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 223 people, about 53 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.61 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.96 per cent and women at 70.21 per cent. The census recorded 171 workers, about 41 per cent of the village. Of the 166 main workers, the largest group, 73, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 60 cultivators on their own land and 32 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (206 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 60 cultivators and 78 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Sultanpur Lodhi, the tehsil headquarters, and Kapurthala town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Toti, Rampur Jagir, Sherpur Dona and Tashpur.
