Where is Sangrai?

Sangrai is a village in Kapurthala tehsil of Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dhilwan, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhilwan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029116, and it covers 85 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 470 people in Sangrai: 222 men and 248 women, living in 103 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 85 hectares, the population density works out to about 556 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1117 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 40, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 95 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.79 per cent and women at 73.57 per cent. The census recorded 139 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 134 main workers, the largest group, 75, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 42 agricultural labourers and 17 cultivators on their own land. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (75 hectares). About 9 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Neighbouring villages include Gudani, Sangowal, Mangewal and Jai Rampur.
