Where is Behlolpur?

Behlolpur is a village in Samrala tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Machhiwara, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Machhiwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032979, and it covers 658 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,615 people in Behlolpur: 1,322 men and 1,293 women, living in 495 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 658 hectares, the population density works out to about 397 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 978 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 346, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 563 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.59 per cent and women at 74.71 per cent. The census recorded 897 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 683 main workers, the largest group, 296, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 195 cultivators on their own land and 141 household industry workers. A further 214 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (528 hectares). About 118 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 213 cultivators and 95 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Machhiwara, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Samrala, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Billon, Shatabgarh, Fatehgarh and Chak Lohat.
