Where is Ber Kalan?

Ber Kalan is a village in Payal tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Maloud, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033306, and it covers 535 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,613 people in Ber Kalan: 1,373 men and 1,240 women, living in 493 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 535 hectares, the population density works out to about 488 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 903 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 267, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,012 people, about 39 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.79 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.08 per cent and women at 70.18 per cent. The census recorded 1,420 workers, about 54 per cent of the village. Of the 1,182 main workers, the largest group, 505, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 295 agricultural labourers and 266 cultivators on their own land. A further 238 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ber Kalan's land. Of the village's 535 hectares, 476 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 456 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (456 hectares). About 57 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. The census recorded 278 cultivators and 321 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Maloud, about 3 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Payal, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Gosal, Dhaul Khurd, Dhaul Kalan and Lehal.
