Where is Gosal?

Gosal is a village in Payal tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Maloud, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033307, and it covers 388 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,807 people in Gosal: 921 men and 886 women, living in 330 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 388 hectares, the population density works out to about 466 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 962 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 169, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 469 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.47 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.74 per cent and women at 69.01 per cent. The census recorded 544 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 290 main workers, the largest group, 185, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 72 other workers in trade, transport and services and 20 household industry workers. A further 254 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Gosal's land. Of the village's 388 hectares, 348 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 340 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (340 hectares). About 36 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. With 213 cultivators and 134 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Maloud, about 4 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Payal, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ber Kalan, Dhaul Kalan, Rosiana and Dhaul Khurd.
