History

Malout is the second-largest city of Sri Muktsar Sahib district and an important railway junction, with lines running toward Bathinda, Fazilka and Ferozepur. That connectivity made it the transport hub of the area.

The city developed as a grain and cotton mandi. After Partition, refugees settled here and Malout expanded; its colleges later made it an educational centre for the surrounding region as well.

Geography & people

Malout stands west of Sri Muktsar Sahib, toward the Rajasthan border, in cotton, wheat and mustard country. The 2011 census counted 81,406 residents. The city is the market, college and hospital town for a large rural hinterland.
