Where is Faridke?

Faridke is a village in Budhlada tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mansa, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Budhlada community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035991, and it covers 465 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 713 people in Faridke: 379 men and 334 women, living in 133 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 465 hectares, the population density works out to about 153 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 881 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 67, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 423 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 54.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 62.39 per cent and women at 45.87 per cent. The census recorded 459 workers, about 64 per cent of the village. Of the 351 main workers, the largest group, 248, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 91 cultivators on their own land and 12 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 108 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Faridke's land. Of the village's 465 hectares, 418 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 417 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (399 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (18 hectares). About 47 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 177 cultivators and 269 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Mansa, about 18 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Budhlada, the tehsil headquarters, and Mansa, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Sandli, Malkon, Udat Saidewala and Malakpur Bhimra.
