Where is Dhobra?

Dhobra is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Pathankot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027601, and it covers 182 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,204 people in Dhobra: 648 men and 556 women, living in 239 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 182 hectares, the population density works out to about 662 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 858 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 121, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 321 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.57 per cent and women at 77.76 per cent. The census recorded 343 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 306 main workers, the largest group, 166, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 70 agricultural labourers and 41 cultivators on their own land. A further 37 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Dhobra's land. Of the village's 182 hectares, 157 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 146 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (144 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (2 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 42 cultivators and 85 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Pathankot, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dhalorian, Jagatpur, Jhako Lahri and Gurdaspur Bhaian.
