Where is Taloor?

Taloor is a village of Pathankot tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027620, and it covers 260 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,032 people in Taloor: 1,060 men and 972 women, living in 388 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 260 hectares, the population density works out to about 782 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 917 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 212, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,006 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.26 per cent and women at 73.17 per cent. The census recorded 688 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 465 main workers, the largest group, 308, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 83 agricultural labourers and 74 cultivators on their own land. A further 223 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Taloor's land. Of the village's 260 hectares, 230 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (160 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (70 hectares). About 2 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 79 cultivators and 180 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Pathankot, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kharkhara Thuthowala, Man Singhpur, Naroli and Kharkhara Tarf Narot.
