Where is Kulburchha?

Kulburchha is a village of Samana tehsil in Patiala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Samana, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samana community development block and is served by the Kulburach gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036208, and it covers 712 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,690 people in Kulburchha: 1,456 men and 1,234 women, living in 542 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 712 hectares, the population density works out to about 378 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 848 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 330, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,076 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 53.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 58.18 per cent and women at 49.03 per cent. The census recorded 1,068 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 950 main workers, the largest group, 379, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 279 agricultural labourers and 272 cultivators on their own land. A further 118 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (179 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (51 hectares). About 18 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 275 cultivators and 289 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
