Where is Arkbas?

Arkbas is a village of Lehra tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Lehragaga, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Lehragaga community development block and is served by the Akbas gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039906, and it covers 480 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,732 people in Arkbas: 907 men and 825 women, living in 367 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 480 hectares, the population density works out to about 361 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 910 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 189, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 832 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 52.88 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 58.35 per cent and women at 46.96 per cent. The census recorded 535 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 492 main workers, the largest group, 202, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 164 agricultural labourers and 124 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 43 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Arkbas's land. Of the village's 480 hectares, 410 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (305 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (105 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 205 cultivators and 176 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
