Where is Basiarkh?

Basiarkh is a village of Bhawanigarh tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039730, and it covers 774 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,394 people in Basiarkh: 1,298 men and 1,096 women, living in 426 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 774 hectares, the population density works out to about 309 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 844 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 248, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 876 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.35 per cent and women at 56.52 per cent. The census recorded 770 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 595 main workers, the largest group, 294, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 280 cultivators on their own land and 14 agricultural labourers. A further 175 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
