Where is Jharon?

Jharon is a village of Sunam tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Cheema, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sunam community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039794, and it covers 1,044 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,708 people in Jharon: 2,545 men and 2,163 women, living in 943 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 1,044 hectares, the population density works out to about 451 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 850 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 533, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,540 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 53.58 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 57.04 per cent and women at 49.48 per cent. The census recorded 1,700 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 1,548 main workers, the largest group, 728, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 711 other workers in trade, transport and services and 90 agricultural labourers. A further 152 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
