Where is Shafipur Kalan?

Shafipur Kalan is a village in Dirba tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dirba, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sunam community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039818, and it covers 577 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,213 people in Shafipur Kalan: 1,189 men and 1,024 women, living in 430 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 577 hectares, the population density works out to about 383 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 861 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 233, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 679 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.06 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 65.72 per cent and women at 55.7 per cent. The census recorded 754 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 714 main workers, the largest group, 286, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 215 other workers in trade, transport and services and 197 agricultural labourers. A further 40 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
