Where is Amlala?

Amlala is a village in Dera Bassi tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Banur, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dera Bassi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039360, and it covers 471 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,943 people in Amlala: 1,593 men and 1,350 women, living in 532 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 471 hectares, the population density works out to about 625 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 847 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 319, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 806 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.2 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.64 per cent and women at 71.98 per cent. The census recorded 1,235 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 778 main workers, the largest group, 314, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 183 cultivators on their own land and 155 household industry workers. A further 457 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Amlala's land. Of the village's 471 hectares, 339 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 295 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (295 hectares). About 105 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 244 cultivators and 213 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
