Where is Bajheri?

Bajheri is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039100, and it covers 388 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,518 people in Bajheri: 809 men and 709 women, living in 297 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 388 hectares, the population density works out to about 391 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 876 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 131, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 303 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.89 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.16 per cent and women at 72.7 per cent. The census recorded 446 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 388 main workers, the largest group, 228, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 122 cultivators on their own land and 22 agricultural labourers. A further 58 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (371 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
