Where is Dharamgarh?

Dharamgarh is a village in Dera Bassi tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dera Bassi, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dera Bassi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039284, and it covers 310 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,491 people in Dharamgarh: 1,405 men and 1,086 women, living in 448 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 310 hectares, the population density works out to about 804 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 773 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 259, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 251 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.56 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.62 per cent and women at 74.16 per cent. The census recorded 1,047 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 520 main workers, the largest group, 357, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 86 cultivators on their own land and 46 agricultural labourers. A further 527 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dharamgarh's land. Of the village's 310 hectares, 267 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 23 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (23 hectares). About 43 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 136 cultivators and 93 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
