Where is Naglian?

Naglian is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039075, and it covers 234 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 677 people in Naglian: 352 men and 325 women, living in 122 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 234 hectares, the population density works out to about 289 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 923 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 74, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 299 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.92 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.73 per cent and women at 76.87 per cent. The census recorded 189 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 170 main workers, the largest group, 67, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 61 cultivators on their own land and 39 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Naglian's land. Of the village's 234 hectares, 142 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 94 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (94 hectares). About 85 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. The census recorded 61 cultivators and 86 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
