Where is Chahar Mazara?

Chahar Mazara is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rahon, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Chahar Mazra gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032307, and it covers 156 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 552 people in Chahar Mazara: 270 men and 282 women, living in 103 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 156 hectares, the population density works out to about 354 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1044 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 46, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 195 people, about 35 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.9 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.37 per cent and women at 71.65 per cent. The census recorded 202 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 140 main workers, the largest group, 61, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 42 other workers in trade, transport and services and 25 agricultural labourers. A further 62 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Nawanshahr, the tehsil headquarters, and Nawanshahr, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Jalwaha, Kazampur, Shamspur and Chakli Shujat.
