Where is Danewala?

Danewala is a village in Malout tehsil of Sri Muktsar Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Malout, about 1 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malout community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035280, and it covers 1,050 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,133 people in Danewala: 1,655 men and 1,478 women, living in 548 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 1,050 hectares, the population density works out to about 298 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 893 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 347, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,440 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 60.88 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 66.19 per cent and women at 54.94 per cent. The census recorded 1,146 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 1,081 main workers, the largest group, 422, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 347 agricultural labourers and 291 cultivators on their own land. A further 65 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Danewala's land. Of the village's 1,050 hectares, 728 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (728 hectares). About 322 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 292 cultivators and 374 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre.

Neighbouring villages include Sheikhu, Ghumar Khera, Jandwala Charat Singh and Kingra.
