Where is Raniwala?

Raniwala is a village in Malout tehsil of Sri Muktsar Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Malout, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malout community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035255, and it covers 1,163 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,324 people in Raniwala: 1,749 men and 1,575 women, living in 587 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 1,163 hectares, the population density works out to about 286 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 901 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 376, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 594 people, about 18 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.49 per cent and women at 59.55 per cent. The census recorded 1,171 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 1,085 main workers, the largest group, 635, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 286 agricultural labourers and 138 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 86 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Raniwala's land. Of the village's 1,163 hectares, 638 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (638 hectares). About 525 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 642 cultivators and 308 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Malout, about 11 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Malout, the tehsil headquarters, and Sri Muktsar Sahib, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bodiwala Kharak Singh, Patti Karam, Ratta Khera and Ratta Tibba.
