Where is Sarai Naga?

Sarai Naga is a village in Muktsar tehsil of Sri Muktsar Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bariwala, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Muktsar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035457, and it covers 690 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,812 people in Sarai Naga: 1,488 men and 1,324 women, living in 538 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 690 hectares, the population density works out to about 408 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 293, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,658 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.33 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.94 per cent and women at 61.01 per cent. The census recorded 981 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 880 main workers, the largest group, 370, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 319 agricultural labourers and 163 cultivators on their own land. A further 101 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Sarai Naga's land. Of the village's 690 hectares, 607 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (607 hectares). About 83 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 168 cultivators and 382 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Schools and facilities

The Census 2011 Village Directory gives the fullest picture of village facilities. Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre.

No health facility was recorded inside the village in 2011. Treated tap water was available in the village. The village had its own post office. It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. Banking was available in the village itself, with a commercial bank branch and a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 15 hours a day.

Muktsar, the tehsil headquarters, and Sri Muktsar Sahib, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chak Khokhar, Khokhar, Haraj and Bari Hari Urf Harike Kalan.
