Where is Chung?

Chung is a village of Patti tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhikhiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038088, and it covers 537 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,137 people in Chung: 1,178 men and 959 women, living in 432 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 537 hectares, the population density works out to about 398 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 814 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 300, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 886 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 54.87 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 60.38 per cent and women at 48.33 per cent. The census recorded 679 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 612 main workers, the largest group, 251, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 178 cultivators on their own land and 174 agricultural labourers. A further 67 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Chung's land. Of the village's 537 hectares, 489 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (59 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (430 hectares). About 48 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 183 cultivators and 213 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Patti, about 20 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Patti, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Algon, Bhaini Massa Singh, Mari Nauabad and Basarke.
