Gurdwara Bhai Joga Singh is a historic Sikh gurdwara in Mohalla Jogan Shah, near the Namak Mandi food streets of Peshawar's old city in Pakistan. Founded under the Sikh Empire by General Hari Singh Nalwa, it honours Bhai Joga Singh, a young devotee of Guru Gobind Singh Ji whose home town was Peshawar. Closed at Partition in 1947, it reopened in 1980 and still serves the city's Pashto speaking Sikh community. It is listed in our guide to Gurdwaras in Pakistan.
What is Gurdwara Bhai Joga Singh, Peshawar?
It is Peshawar's best known working gurdwara: a shrine of the Sikh Empire period, more than 200 years old by local accounts, where the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is installed and the local sangat gathers morning and evening. Its name keeps alive the story of Bhai Joga Singh, who gave up his own wedding the moment his Guru called him back.
The story of Bhai Joga Singh
Bhai Joga Singh spent his youth in the service of Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib. When his parents came to take him home to Peshawar for his marriage, the Guru let him go on one condition: if the Guru recalled him, he must return at once. The recall letter reached Peshawar in the middle of the wedding ceremony, after only two of the four laavan, the hymns sung as the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Joga Singh rose, left the ceremony unfinished, and set out for Anandpur despite his family's protests.
On the road, pride in his own obedience began to grow in him. Stopping for a night at Hoshiarpur, he was tempted to visit a courtesan's house, but each of the four times he approached the door he found a Sikh standing guard who reminded him of his Guru. Shaken and full of remorse, he confessed everything at Anandpur. Sikh tradition holds that the Guru told him the guard had been the Guru himself, watching over his Sikh, and answered Joga Singh's words, Guru Ji, mein tere joga, I am worthy only of you, with words of his own: because you are mine, I am yours. The sakhi is still told wherever his name is remembered, and a gurdwara at Hoshiarpur marks the night halt.
History of the gurdwara
When Peshawar came under the Sikh Empire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, his celebrated general Hari Singh Nalwa founded this gurdwara in Jogan Shah and named it for Bhai Joga Singh, the city's own son. For more than a century it was a centre of worship for Peshawar's Sikhs. At Partition in 1947 most of the city's Sikh families left, and the gurdwara was shut. Community elders recall that when permission to reopen came in 1980, it took three days simply to clean the building before worship could begin again.
The shrine's fabric has suffered since. The earthquake of 2005 badly damaged the building, and by September 2025 The Express Tribune was reporting cracks in the walls of the upper floors, rainwater coming through damaged roofs, and a condition worsening year by year because restoration funds had not been released. Two minority members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Gurpal Singh and Askar Pervez, visited the shrine and jointly moved a resolution asking the federal government to fund its repair and reconstruction without further delay.
Worship and significance today
Gurdwara Bhai Joga Singh is a living place of worship, not a monument. The sangat of Peshawar gathers here in the morning and again in the evening, visiting worshippers from abroad sometimes join them, and the Parkash of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji takes place daily. Peshawar's Sikhs are largely Pashto speaking, rooted in the city for generations, and this gurdwara, together with Gurdwara Bhai Biba Singh across the old city, anchors their religious life.
How do you reach Gurdwara Bhai Joga Singh?
The gurdwara stands in Mohalla Jogan Shah near Namak Mandi, inside Peshawar's old walled city, a short walk from the Qissa Khwani Bazaar area. Most overseas pilgrims visit Peshawar's gurdwaras as part of organised pilgrim groups travelling with the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee and the Evacuee Trust Property Board, and independent visitors should check local arrangements and security advice before going. Visitors cover their heads, remove their shoes, and wash their hands and feet before entering the prayer hall, as at any gurdwara.
Why does this gurdwara need saving?
Because it is both things at once: a working shrine for a small and resilient community, and one of the last Sikh Empire buildings of Peshawar still in daily use. The 2025 appeals by local lawmakers underline that worship alone cannot hold up a 200 year old structure damaged by an earthquake. Its preservation matters to Sikhs worldwide, for whom Bhai Joga Singh's story is a lesson in devotion, humility and grace.
