On The Gore Road in Brampton, a stepped tower 37 metres high rises over what was farmland within living memory, and the city has grown up around it. The Hindu Sabha Mandir is one of the oldest Hindu institutions in Canada: its trust was founded in 1975 by five Hindus who wanted to preserve and promote Hindu dharma and culture in their new country, and its temple, whose first deity, Maa Jagdamba, was installed with pran pratishtha rites in 1994, is today a prayer hall for some 2,500 people with a Hindu school and community hall beside it. Where the BAPS temple across Toronto was carved in India and assembled by an international organisation, Hindu Sabha was built the other way, by a local congregation that began in apartments and library rooms and bought its own farm.
What is the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton?
The Hindu Sabha Mandir is a Hindu temple at 9225 The Gore Road, Brampton, Ontario, Canada, run by the Hindu Sabha trust. The temple's own history says the trust acquired 25 acres of land on The Gore Road, where the present temple stands, and that the new temple opened there in 1994 with the pran pratishtha, the consecration rite, of Maa Jagdamba, after which other deities were installed with full rituals by the temple's priests and visiting saints from India. The temple describes its present building as spanning more than 34,000 square feet. A Toronto Star report carried by Harvard's Pluralism Project in September 2004 described the Gore Road temple as an 11 million dollar building of 32,000 square feet on 8.5 hectares, with a main prayer hall holding close to 2,500 people, a Hindu school, a community hall and 440 parking spaces, its 37 metre tower visible from kilometres away. The two figures reflect a temple that kept growing; both are recorded here with their sources.
How did Hindu Sabha begin in 1975?
In 1975, the temple's own account says, five visionary Hindus, its founding members, created a charitable trust under the name Hindu Sabha, with a mission of showcasing, preserving, protecting and promoting Hindu dharma, civilisation and culture in Canada. The beginnings were humble: religious discourses, poojas, havans and Hindu festivals held in people's apartments and homes and in city centre library rooms. In 1978 the trust bought a farm property on Highway 10 in Brampton, and the congregation worshipped for a time in a renovated farmhouse at Derry Road and Highway 10, as the Toronto Star report describes the late 1970s shrine. That farmhouse temple was later demolished as Highway 407 was built, and the community's future moved to the land on The Gore Road, where the temple stands today and where, the Star noted in 2004, new housing was already rising around the shrine as immigrant families settled near it.
A tower over a new suburb
The Gore Road temple made Hindu presence visible in the suburban landscape in a way a farmhouse never could. Its great stepped tower, 37 metres tall in the Star's description, can be seen from kilometres away, and the temple's own photograph shows the modern form clearly: a tall, tiered shikhara like tower with bands of glass, flanked by two smaller towers over a long, low prayer complex, with a large Om sign on the main wall. It is a Canadian building, designed for Ontario winters and a congregation that arrives by car, yet its silhouette speaks the language of the Indian temple tower, the subject of Jugti's Nagara temple architecture explainer. Inside, the scale serves the calendar: a hall that can hold close to 2,500 people fills for Diwali, Navratri and the major festivals, while the Hindu school and community hall carry the teaching and social work of the congregation through the week.
What happens at Hindu Sabha through the week?
The temple's own site lists it open every day from 7 in the morning to 9 in the evening, with morning aarti at 7 and evening aarti at 7. The weekly rhythm is printed on the same page: Rudra Abhishek on Mondays, Hanuman Chalisa recitation on Tuesdays, Shivling Shringar through Wednesdays, and priti bhoj, a community meal, served every day from noon. Around that core turn the festivals of the Hindu year, discourses, poojas and havans of the kind the founders first organised in living rooms, now held for thousands. In 2025 the Hindu Sabha trust reached fifty years since the five founders created it in 1975, half a century from living rooms to a landmark temple. For Brampton's large Punjabi and wider Hindu population, many of whom settled in the subdivisions that grew up around The Gore Road, the mandir is both the oldest address of their faith in the city and its everyday centre.
How does Hindu Sabha compare with Toronto's BAPS Mandir?
The two temples, a short drive apart in the Greater Toronto Area, tell two stories of Hindu Canada. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Etobicoke is a single tradition's masterpiece, carved in India to ancient rules and opened in 2007 by a global organisation. Hindu Sabha is older as an institution, founded in 1975, and broader in its welcome: a community trust temple, built by local devotees, donors, volunteers and priests, serving Hindus of many regions and traditions under one roof, with Maa Jagdamba installed first among its deities. One shows what a worldwide movement can build; the other shows what a neighbourhood congregation can build for itself over fifty years. Together with Delhi's modern Akshardham on Jugti, they map how the mandir has taken new forms far from India while keeping its place at the centre of community life.
Visiting Hindu Sabha Mandir, Brampton
The temple stands at 9225 The Gore Road, Brampton, Ontario L6P 0B6, in the city's northeast, reached by car from Queen Street East and The Gore Road, with parking on site for hundreds of cars. The temple's own site lists opening hours of 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, with aarti at 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening, so an aarti visit shows the hall at prayer; festival evenings are the busiest and most colourful times. Visitors are guests at a working temple: dress modestly, remove footwear where asked, and follow the directions of priests and volunteers. Combine the visit with the BAPS Mandir in Etobicoke to see, in one day, the two founding forms of the Hindu temple in Canada, the carved stone shikharbaddha mandir and the community built Sabha temple.
