High in the bushland hills above Helensburgh, a small town between Sydney and Wollongong, stands a white carved temple tower that looks as if it has been lifted straight out of Tamil Nadu. This is the Sri Venkateswara Temple, known to its devotees as SVT Sydney: Australia's first Hindu temple built in the traditional style, raised by Sydney's Hindu community and consecrated on 30 June 1985. Heritage listed, set about 400 feet above sea level on the Grand Pacific Drive, it is a Shiva and Vishnu temple in one complex, and one of the best known Hindu temples in the southern hemisphere.

What is Sri Venkateswara Temple, Helensburgh?

The Sri Venkateswara Temple is a Hindu temple at 1 Temple Road, Helensburgh, New South Wales, built according to the Agama Sastras, the traditional texts that govern temple design and worship. Its main shrine honours Lord Venkateswara, also called Balaji, a form of Vishnu, together with Goddess Maha Lakshmi and Sri Andal. A second temple in the same complex honours Lord Shiva as Chandramouliswarar, with Goddess Tripurasundari. Because it serves both traditions, the temple was planned with two rajagopurams, the great entrance towers of South Indian temples, and four praharams, the corridors that circle the shrines. Its story is told on the temple's own site, and the New South Wales Government lists it among the state's visitor attractions with free entry.

For Punjabi and other Indian families in Australia, the temple matters for a simple reason: it was the first place in the country where worship could happen in a purpose built traditional mandir, rather than in a hall or a home. The deity it honours is the same Lord Venkateswara worshipped at Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh, whose temple Jugti covers in its guide to the Tirupati Balaji temple.

A vision in 1978, and a seven year build

The temple began with a small group of Sydney Hindus who wanted a temple built the traditional way. The Sri Venkateswara Temple Association was formed on 17 November 1978, and construction started that year. For the site they chose virgin bushland at Helensburgh, following an old principle the temple quotes from the Brihatsamhita: that the gods delight in places near groves, rivers, mountains and springs, by the coast. Helensburgh, in green hills above the sea, fitted that picture.

Help came from India as well as from local devotees. The temple records that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the trust that runs the great Tirupati temple, gave encouragement and financial help. Skilled temple sculptors from India built the shrines, and the temple says they worked without modern engineering tools. After seven years of building, the Mahakumbhabhishekam, the consecration with sacred waters, was held on 30 June 1985 for Lord Ganapathi (Sri Varasiddhi Vinayagar) and for the main deities Sri Venkateswara, Sri Maha Lakshmi and Sri Andal.

Two temples in one complex

Most Australian temples began as a single shrine. Helensburgh was planned from the start as a Siva Vishnu temple, so Vaishnava and Shaiva devotees could both worship at home here. The Vishnu side centres on Venkateswara with Lakshmi and Andal; the Shiva side on Chandramouliswarar with Tripurasundari. Around them the complex has grown shrine by shrine: in 2023 new shrines were added in the Shiva temple for Nataraja, the cosmic dancer form of Shiva, for Surya and Chandra, the sun and moon, and for the four notable Shaiva saints.

The white towers and carved walls follow the South Indian tradition explained in Jugti's guide to Dravida temple architecture: stepped pyramidal towers covered in sculpture, walled corridors, and shrines arranged so that the tower is the first thing a visitor sees from the road. The temple itself repeats the saying behind that design: gopura darisanam kodi punyam, the sight of the temple tower is worth ten million pious acts.

Heritage listing and a growing landmark

The New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage has listed the temple as a heritage item, recognising its historical, aesthetic and social significance. Further additions were completed before the temple's 25th anniversary in 2010, and the complex keeps growing. Between 2020 and 2022 the gopurams and both temple complexes were renovated, with Indian masons repainting the structures and statues in traditional style. On 10 April 2023 a Maha Kumbhabhishekam drew thousands of devotees to watch sacred water poured over the kalasams, the finials of the towers and shrines. In June 2024 new Vasantha Mandapams, festival pavilions, were created at both the Shiva and Perumal shrines, and in March 2025 work began on a new function centre, expected to take about two years.

Visiting the Helensburgh temple

The temple is open to everyone, and entry is free. The New South Wales visitor listing notes a car park, picnic area and public toilets, and that the site welcomes people with access needs; the temple itself adds a vegetarian canteen, famous with weekend visitors, and rest rooms. It sits on the Grand Pacific Drive between Sydney and Wollongong, so many travellers stop on the coastal road trip. Visitors should dress modestly, remove footwear inside, and follow the temple's guidance on photography and quiet inside the shrines. For a community that began in 1978 with a vision and a patch of bushland, Helensburgh remains what its founders called it: a lighthouse of spiritual guidance for Hindus across Australia.
