Dravida Temple Architecture

The South Indian school of Hindu temple building behind the pyramidal vimana and towering gopurams.

In short

Dravida is the classical South Indian school of Hindu temple architecture, recognised by its stepped pyramidal tower — the vimana — rising over the sanctum, and the towering gatehouses called gopurams that dominate its temple towns. Shaped by Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara builders between the 6th and 16th centuries, it gave India icons like the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur and the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai.

What is Dravida temple architecture?

Dravida — also called the Southern Indian temple style — is one of the three classical schools of Hindu temple building named in the early texts on vastu shastra, the Sanskrit science of architecture. Where North India's Nagara temples reach for the sky with a tall, curving shikhara, Dravida temples stack their towers in receding tiers, like a pyramid.

The style emerged in the Tamil country and the Deccan and reached its fullest form between about the 6th and 16th centuries CE. Today its temples stand across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala, with outliers in Sri Lanka, Odisha and Maharashtra — built over a thousand years by dynasties from the Pallavas and Chalukyas to the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara Empire.

Vimana, gopuram, mandapa: reading a Dravida temple

The heart of a Dravida temple is the garbhagriha, the womb-chamber or sanctum where the deity's image sits. Directly above it rises the vimana — the tower most people picture when they think of a South Indian temple. Unlike the Nagara shikhara, which curves inward as it climbs, the vimana rises in clearly marked horizontal tiers, each smaller than the one below, and is crowned by a domed capstone.

In front of the sanctum sits the mandapa, a pillared hall where worshippers gather; many temples add further halls — chaultris or chawadis — for festivals, music and community use. Flanking the entrance and the inner sanctum stand dvarapalakas, twin guardian figures, and the sanctum's outer walls carry goshtams, deities carved into niches.

But the feature that dominates the modern Dravida temple town is the gopura — the great gate-pyramid. Large temples have several, each taller than the last, so that the entrance towers dwarf even the vimana. This is a relatively recent development in the style's long history: the gopura, not the sanctum tower, is what you see first from miles away.

How is Dravida different from Nagara?

The contrast is easiest to see in the towers. A Nagara shikhara is a single tall, curving mass, usually finished with a ribbed amalaka disc and a kalasha finial, rising directly over the sanctum with no competing gate towers. A Dravida complex is a walled city in miniature: the vimana over the sanctum is comparatively short, while one or more gopurams — often far taller — mark the gates of the enclosing walls, the prakaras.

Dravida temples also tend to sprawl. Concentric walled enclosures, pillared thousand-hall mandapas, and the temple tank — the kalyani or pushkarni, used for ritual purposes and for the priests' daily needs — are all characteristic. The two styles are siblings, not rivals: both grew from the same vastu shastra tradition, and the Deccan produced a deliberate hybrid of the two, Vesara.

A thousand years of builders

The earliest Dravida experiments were cut from living rock. The Pallavas (about 275–900 CE) carved pillared halls and monolithic shrines at Mahabalipuram — including the Shore Temple, dated roughly 700–728 CE — and built the Kailasanatha temple at Kanchipuram, which later inspired far greater things.

In the Deccan, the Badami Chalukyas (543–753 CE) fused northern and southern idioms into what became the Vesara style, while the Rashtrakutas (753–973 CE) carved the astonishing Kailasa temple at Ellora out of a single cliff.

The style's grand age came with the Imperial Cholas (848–1280 CE). Rajaraja Chola I's Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, built between 1003 and 1010 CE, is the first great example of the mature Chola temple — a granite mountain whose vimana is among the tallest temple towers in South India. His son Rajendra Chola I answered it at Gangaikondacholapuram, completed in 1035 CE, and Rajaraja II built the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram around 1150 CE. All three are now a single UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Living Chola Temples, inscribed in 1987 and extended in 2004.

The Pandyas raised the gopuram to its full glory — Madurai's Meenakshi Temple, with its forest of sculpted towers, is their signature — and the Vijayanagara emperors carried the style into the 16th century, by which time it had reached its final form.

Vesara: the Deccan's hybrid style

Between the Nagara north and the Dravida south, the Deccan's builders refused to choose. Vesara — the hybrid idiom of the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Kakatiyas — blends the curving shikhara of the north with the stepped vimana of the south, often on the same tower.

You can read the mixture at Pattadakal in Karnataka, where 7th–8th-century temples stand in both idioms side by side, and in the star-shaped shrines of the Hoysalas. If a tower looks neither fully Nagara nor fully Dravida, it is probably Vesara — the Deccan's own answer.

Where can you see Dravida temples today?

  • Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur — the Chola masterpiece (1003–1010 CE), UNESCO World Heritage
  • Meenakshi Temple, Madurai — the great Pandya temple-town, famous for its gopurams
  • Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram — Pallava rock-cut classic by the sea (c. 700–728 CE)
  • Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple — among the oldest active temple complexes in South India
  • Srivilliputhur Andal Temple — its 12-tiered, 59-metre gopuram appears in the emblem of Tamil Nadu
  • Kailasa Temple, Ellora — the Rashtrakuta rock-cut wonder in the Dravida idiom

Which temples are the best examples of Dravida architecture?

For the pure form, start with the three Great Living Chola Temples — Thanjavur, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram. For gopurams at their most spectacular, Madurai's Meenakshi Temple and Srirangam. For the style's origins, the rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram's Kailasanatha. All are living temples, still in daily worship — the ‘living’ in the UNESCO title is literal.
