Assu is the seventh month of the Nanakshahi calendar, the solar calendar of the Sikh Panth, and the first full month of autumn in Punjab. The rains that defined Sawan and Bhadon pull away, the water drains off the fields, and the paddy planted in the summer stands tall and begins to turn gold. In the Sikh year, Assu is a month of remembrance: it carries the Gurgaddi of Guru Ram Das Ji, the Joti Jot of Guru Amar Das Ji, and above all the Joti Jot of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the faith. Assu comes after Bhadon and before Kattak; all twelve months are gathered on the Desi Mahine page.

Assu and its dates

Like every month from Bhadon onwards, Assu has 30 days, and it begins on its sangrand, the first day of the month. In the calendar's fixed reckoning, 1 Assu falls on 15 September and the month runs to 14 October. The SGPC's published calendar adjusts the sangrand by a day or two in some years to keep the months true to the solar cycle: in Nanakshahi 558, the current year, Assu began on Thursday 17 September 2026, because Sawan ran long that year, and it ends on 16 October 2026. Kattak begins the next morning.

The season in Punjab

Assu is the hinge between the monsoon and the cold season. The south-west monsoon withdraws from Punjab during these weeks, the heavy air clears, and the sky returns to the deep blue that Punjab knows for the rest of the year. Days are still warm, often hot at noon, but the fierce humidity of Bhadon is gone and the nights turn pleasantly cool. Rivers fall back within their banks, village ponds settle, and the countryside smells of ripening grain and damp earth drying in the sun. It is the season Punjabis associate with clear light and long views across a green and gold plain.

The farming cycle in Assu

The paddy crop rules Assu. Fields planted in Jeth and Harh are now heavy with grain, and farmers watch the sky closely: a late shower can still help the late varieties, but everyone wants dry days as the ears fill and yellow. Harvesting begins in the last days of the month in early-sown fields, while most of the crop is cut in Kattak. Cotton picking is under way in the south-western districts, sugarcane stands high and thick, and green fodder is cut for the animals. Towards the end of Assu, farmers begin preparing the first harvested plots for the rabi season, when wheat will be sown as the weather cools.

Festivals and Gurpurabs in Assu

Three Gurpurabs give Assu its character in the Sikh calendar. On 8 Assu (24 September in 558) falls the Gurgaddi of Guru Ram Das Ji, marking his succession as the fourth Guru in 1574. On 10 Assu (26 September in 558) the Panth remembers the Joti Jot of Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Guru, who left this world at Goindwal in the same turning of the year; tradition holds the two events together, and the published calendar keeps them within two days of each other.

The month's greatest observance is the Joti Jot of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on 19 Assu (5 October in 558). Guru Nanak spent his last years at Kartarpur, the town he founded on the bank of the Ravi, and there he left this world in 1539. Sangat gathers at gurdwaras everywhere, and above all at Kartarpur, to mark the day with kirtan, katha and langar. The published calendar also marks 15 Assu as the foundation day of the Singh Sabha movement, the reform movement born in Amritsar in 1873 that reshaped Sikh education and identity.

Assu in the Barah Maha

Both Barah Maha compositions in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji give Assu to the longing of the soul-bride. Guru Arjan Dev Ji opens the month with a surge of love: ਅਸੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਉਮਾਹੜਾ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਇ ੥ (In Assu, love wells up within me; how may I go and meet the Lord?) Mind and body thirst for the divine vision, and the bride begs for someone to lead her to the Beloved. The stanza is not all ache: those whom the Lord has united with Himself, Guru Arjan sings, are never separated again, and in Assu those on whom the Sovereign King shows mercy dwell in peace. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Tukhari Barah Maha reads the season itself: the white-flowered shrubs are in bloom, summer is gone and winter is on its way, and the bride sees her own greying hair in the pale blossoms and trembles at time passing. Yet she comforts herself with harvest wisdom: what ripens slowly, in its own sweet time, ripens sweet.

When does Assu start?

In the fixed Nanakshahi reckoning, Assu always begins on 15 September. In the SGPC's published calendar for Nanakshahi 558, the Assu sangrand fell on 17 September 2026, because the month of Sawan before it ran long that year.

Which Gurpurabs fall in Assu?

The Gurgaddi of Guru Ram Das Ji (8 Assu), the Joti Jot of Guru Amar Das Ji (10 Assu) and the Joti Jot of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (19 Assu) are the month's main Gurpurabs in the published calendar.

How many days does Assu have?

Assu has 30 days, like every month from Bhadon to Phaggan in the Nanakshahi design.
