The Nanakshahi calendar is the official Sikh solar calendar, adopted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in 2003 and counted from Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth year, 1469 CE. Its twelve fixed months run from Chet to Phaggan, giving Sikhs permanent dates for sangrand, puranmashi, masya and the year's Gurpurabs.
What is the Nanakshahi calendar?
The Nanakshahi calendar is the Sikh community's own solar calendar. Before it existed, Sikhs marked Gurpurabs with the Bikrami lunisolar calendar, whose extra months pushed religious dates to different Gregorian dates every year and made planning hard, especially in the diaspora. The Nanakshahi calendar fixes every month to the tropical solar year, so most dates fall on the same Gregorian date year after year. The SGPC, Sikhism's largest representative body, adopted it in 2003, and it now anchors the official Sikh religious year worldwide.
Who created the Nanakshahi calendar?
It was designed by Canadian Sikh scholar Pal Singh Purewal, who spent decades researching historical Sikh dates and published his findings in the almanac Jantri 500 Years. He proposed a purely solar system with its epoch at Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth in 1469 CE, so the Nanakshahi year number is the Gregorian year minus 1469 for most of the year. The SGPC adopted his calendar in 2003.
The 12 months of the Nanakshahi calendar
The calendar has twelve months: Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Katik, Maghar, Poh, Magh and Phaggan. The year begins on 1 Chet, which usually falls on 14 March. In the original design the first five months have 31 days and the remaining seven have 30, with Phaggan gaining an extra day in leap years. The SGPC's published calendars occasionally adjust a month by a day: in 558, Sawan has 32 days and Poh has 29.
How Nanakshahi dates map to the Gregorian calendar
Because the calendar is solar, each sangrand, the first day of a Nanakshahi month, lands on nearly the same Gregorian date every year: Chet begins around 14 March, Vaisakh around 14 April, and so on through the year. That fixed mapping is the calendar's whole point: a Gurpurab tied to a Nanakshahi date can be printed in diaries years ahead. The current year, Nanakshahi 558, runs from 14 March 2026 to 13 March 2027, and Nanakshahi 559 begins on 15 March 2027.
Sangrand, puranmashi and masya: the month's three markers
Three dates shape each Nanakshahi month for observant Sikhs. Sangrand is the first day of the month, when many visit the gurdwara and hear the Barah Maha. Puranmashi is the full-moon day, and masya is the new-moon (amavasya) night. Sangrand dates are fixed by the solar calendar; puranmashi and masya follow the moon, so the SGPC fixes them in its official yearly calendar.
Major festivals and Gurpurabs
The year's best-known observances include Vaisakhi on 1 Vaisakh, the Khalsa's founding day; Bandi Chhor Divas, observed with Diwali; the Parkash Gurpurabs of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji; the shaheedi observances of Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji; Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib; and the Pehla Parkash of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Most are fixed to their Nanakshahi dates each year, while a few lunar-origin observances, such as Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Parkash Utsav, can shift slightly.
Bandi Chhor Divas, the day of Guru Hargobind Ji's release from Gwalior Fort, is one of the most widely celebrated dates in the calendar, marked with fireworks and diyas at gurdwaras around the world.

Nanakshahi 559 begins on 1 Chet, 15 March 2027. Its month-by-month dates will be added here when the SGPC publishes the official 559 calendar.
When does Nanakshahi year 559 begin?
Nanakshahi 559 begins on 1 Chet, which falls on Monday, 15 March 2027. The SGPC publishes the official 559 calendar, with its month-by-month sangrand, puranmashi, masya and Gurpurab dates, ahead of the new year.
How is the Nanakshahi calendar different from the Bikrami calendar?
The Bikrami calendar is lunisolar and drifts against the Gregorian calendar, moving religious dates to different Gregorian dates each year. The Nanakshahi calendar is purely solar: its months are fixed to the tropical year, so dates stay put and Gurpurabs can be planned years in advance.
When is Vaisakhi in the Nanakshahi calendar?
Vaisakhi, the Khalsa Sajna Divas marking the creation of the Khalsa, is observed on 1 Vaisakh, the first day of the second Nanakshahi month, which falls on 14 April in most years.
